A.J. Jacobs is a master of experimental living. He takes on a particular lifestyle for a certain period of time, and then writes about what he learns from those experiences. Back in 2007 he gave a TED Talk about his year of living biblically in which he attempted to follow the rules of the Bible as close as he could.
